Day 24: July 7: Chester MT to Shelby MT: 45 miles

Today we had just another one of those bad days. Roger woke up and informed the group that he caught the cold that has been traveling around the group. It was supposed to be hot and the wind would not be in our favor. We tried to get going quickly to try to get some miles done before the heat. We quickly made breakfast in the mini kitchen and headed out.

We were not on the road long and we saw an airplane buzzing by just to the side of us and not very high over our heads.

There has been a crazy amount of crosses on the side of the road in Montana. Today Katie counted 27! I think this state needs to lower their speed limits to something more reasonable.

We also had a very long train pass us. I counted 94 cars!

We were about 25 miles into the day and we saw a car and a cyclist in a parking lot on the side of the road. He wanted to talk and swap info about the routes. He is also raising money for food pantries during his trip. He is almost 70 years old. He had a friend providing SAG support for him. We were able to gain some good information about the road conditions ahead.

As we closed in on our first town of the day, Shelby, Chris was beginning to feel sick to. We entered town and found a place to eat. After sitting for a while, we decided we would not be able to continue today. Two sick people, the heat, the road getting hillier, and no places to stop in between to cool off, we starting looking for a place to stay.

Once getting in the room we found that TJ has been putting on a few extra pounds this week, hehehe.

Dad was also very happy to be resting and relaxing...if only he could get some quiet. The good news is he is sick but still smiling!

We also decided he stole Dee's socks...they clearly say DeFeet.

45 miles (1185 total)

It finally happened

So, we were biking along and katie says "Chris....are those the mountains at 10 oclock?" They were. You could barely see them in the distance.

"I can only see the snow caps" I told katie.

"RUMPLESTILTSKIN!!!! I thought those were low clouds!" She replied.

Then they were gone. If the skies are clear tomorrow, we should get a better view. It was a priceless moment.
